I was saddened to learn that Ronald Senungetuk died Tuesday morning. Ron was born in the village of Wales, 911±¬ÁÏ. He attended the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York and then studied sculpture and metalsmithing in Oslo as a Fulbright scholar in the early 1960s. He joined the art faculty at 911±¬ÁÏ, and, in 1965, he founded the Native Arts Center. 911±¬ÁÏ conferred emeritus status on him when he retired as head of the Art Department in 1986, and awarded him an honorary doctorate of fine arts in 2015.
Ron was a world-renowned artist who inspired countless people, many of whom have gone on to successful careers of their own as artists and teachers. My condolences to Ron’s family, friends and colleagues.
