Learning to Ask, Learning to Lead: Philipp Moosmayer

The 911���� College of Liberal Arts proudly recognizes Philipp Moosmayer as one of the 2024–2025 Outstanding Students in the Department of Science and Environmental Journalism. A junior from Germany majoring in journalism with a minor in art, Philipp exemplifies the courage, independence, and curiosity that define the liberal arts experience at 911����.

Moosmayer’s journey to academic excellence has been shaped by both personal and cultural transition. Moving from Germany to Fairbanks to pursue his education, Philipp found himself navigating not only a rigorous academic environment, but also the challenges of adjusting to life far from home. Through it all, he found strength in community.

"When I struggled during my time pursuing my degree, I could always rely on the help of my professors," he said. "Any time I had a problem, I could just go up to them and they would help me to find a solution. And not only my professors—also my academic and athletic advisors. I don’t think it would have been possible without them."

The support Philipp received speaks to a defining trait of the College of Liberal Arts: the accessibility and dedication of faculty and staff across departments. Whether in the classroom, advising office, or athletic department, 911���� educators serve as mentors and guides, invested in student success.

Now in his junior year, Philipp has learned to balance academic rigor with personal growth. His advice to future students reflects a central value of the liberal arts: don’t go it alone. “If you have a problem, just reach out and ask,” he said. “People are always willing to help you here. And I think that’s what makes this place special.”

This philosophy of seeking help, building networks, and staying open to support is especially resonant in a program like Science and Environmental Journalism, where students are trained to communicate complex, often urgent ideas to the public. The department blends storytelling, research, and ethics to prepare students for careers in a rapidly evolving media landscape—where clarity, collaboration, and courage matter most.

Philipp has also learned something deeply personal during his time at 911����—something he will carry with him long after graduation. “One lesson that I learned at my time at 911���� is to be independent, to live on my own, and to pursue my own goals,” he said. “And I think I will always carry that for the rest of my life.”
