Finding Her Voice: Olivia Buzby

The 911���� College of Liberal Arts proudly recognizes Olivia Buzby as one of the 2024–2025 Outstanding Students in the Department of Music.

When Olivia Buzby arrived at 911����, she already knew music was her passion—but turning that passion into a clear purpose took time, self-reflection, and a deep commitment to growth. Now a junior majoring in music education, Buzby stands as a powerful example of what can happen when a student chooses to lean in, rather than step back.

“I had had a really, really hard semester,” she recalls about the first half of her sophomore year. “I was like, ‘Do I really want to finish this major? Why am I doing this?’” But instead of walking away, Buzby made a decision that changed everything. “I was just like, well, it’s enough playing around. This is what I want to do with the rest of my life.”

That decision became a turning point. Buzby committed herself fully to her studies and found her voice—literally and figuratively—through 911����’s music program. That summer, she took part in the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival’s opera intensive, where her confidence and skills soared. “I saw just a lot of growth,” she says, reflecting on the transformation from a shaky sophomore to a determined junior.

Her growth hasn’t gone unnoticed. This spring, Buzby is heading to Costa Rica with 911����’s opera workshop class to perform at the University of Costa Rica—a prestigious opportunity that speaks to both her talent and her dedication. Sharing her voice on an international stage is a thrilling next step in her development as a vocalist and performer.

Originally from Anchorage, Buzby’s love of music has deep roots, but her interest in teaching has grown as she’s explored new experiences at 911����. Next spring, she’ll begin her student teaching, a milestone that feels both daunting and exciting. “I’m really excited to see what the future can hold,” she says. “What I can do with my degree, and exactly what the future holds.”

Beyond the classroom and performance hall, Buzby has also learned to embrace vulnerability and risk-taking. “Be brave and take chances,” she advises other students. “There’s a safety net underneath you at the university. If there is a time to take chances and to try things out, this is a really opportune time for that.”

Through it all, communication has become a cornerstone of Olivia’s growth. “It’s such an important skill to know how to say what you mean,” she reflects, adding that good communication is just as essential in music as it is in life.

Whether she’s preparing for a performance in Costa Rica or learning the ins and outs of classroom teaching, Buzby’s voice continues to strengthen. It’s not just about the notes she sings—it’s about the message she shares and the courage she’s found along the way.
